Should I worry about my daughter’s imaginary friend?

My eight-year-old daughter is an only child and has had a imaginary friend for several years. Nothing bad has ever happened. But the other day I heard her talking to her ifriend about her great grandfather and aunt, both of whom passed away last year. I don’t know if this is normal or if I should worry.

Many children have imaginary friends. There is some evidence that children with imaginary friends are more socially advanced than those who don’t have imaginary friends. She is probably talking to her imaginary friend as a way of understanding the deaths of her grandfather and her aunt. This is healthy.

Use this as an opportunity to discuss these issues with your daughter.
